Step by step

What to do in a life-threatening emergency

1
Assess the scene
Is it safe to approach? How many casualties? What caused the emergency?

Check response
Talk to and gently stimulate the casualty — check for a response and normal breathing.
3
Call for help
Emergency services, workplace first aider or both — do this early.
4
Primary survey
DRSABCD — identify and treat life-threatening conditions first.
5
CPR & AED
Start CPR and attach an AED without delay if the casualty is not breathing normally.
6
Treat & stabilise
Manage choking, bleeding, shock, asthma or anaphylaxis as the situation requires.
7
Monitor & handover

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from Provide CPR?
Provide CPR (HLTAID009) covers CPR and AED use only. Basic Emergency Life Support (HLTAID010) builds on that with choking, bleeding, shock, asthma and anaphylaxis response — a broader foundation course.
How is this different from Provide First Aid?
Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) goes further — fractures, burns, head injuries and a wider range of medical emergencies. BELS is a shorter, entry-level course focused on the most time-critical, life-threatening situations.
Do I need prior experience?
No. The course starts from first principles and is suitable for anyone, regardless of prior first aid training.
How long is the certificate valid?
Many workplaces require annual renewal of the CPR component as a condition of employment. We recommend booking a refresher before your current certificate lapses.
Is onsite delivery available?
Yes, for groups of 6 or more anywhere in PNG. We bring all equipment including manikins and AED trainers.
