Step by step

What to do in an asthma emergency

1
Recognise symptoms
Difficulty breathing, wheeze, persistent cough or an inability to speak in full sentences.

Sit the person up
Keep them calm and upright — never lay someone having an asthma attack flat.

Give reliever medication
4 puffs via spacer, waited 4 breaths each, following the person’s action plan.

Wait & reassess
Wait 4 minutes — if no improvement, repeat the reliever dose.

Call emergency services
If there’s no improvement after repeated doses, or symptoms are severe, call for help immediately.

Continue reliever every 4 min
Keep giving 4 puffs every 4 minutes until help arrives.

Document & review
Record the episode and review the person’s asthma action plan afterwards.

Delivery & assessment

Approx. 4 hours — theory, demonstration and hands-on practice with trainer devices. AM or PM sessions available, Monday–Friday. Onsite delivery available.
